OMU Shared YÖS Experiences with Hitit University

Ondokuz Mayıs University YÖS promotion and information activities continue with online meetings. In this context, an online meeting was organized with Hitit University. In the meeting, YÖS exam organization stages, application-exam automation, technological infrastructure used, measurement and evaluation activities, student preference and registration issues were discussed in the form of question and answer.

The meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Şimşek, Vice Rector of Hitit University, International Relations Officer Dr. Assist. Prof. Dr. Murat Yılmaz, International Relations Officer Dr. Lecturer Murat Toman, HUZEM Director Dr. Lecturer Serkan Dişlitaş, Ahmet Kamil Benli from the International Office, TÖMER Director Assist. Assist. Prof. Dr. Cengiz Batuk, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Cengiz Batuk, International Relations Officer Assoc. “Inter-university Cooperation Should be Developed”

OMU UZEM Director Dr. Lecturer Hasan Atsız made the opening speech of the meeting. Prof. Hasan Atsız shared his experiences about OMU YÖS exam studies, student preference stages and the risks that may arise in the exam. Stating that a joint exam study may be possible, he signaled a future cooperation protocol. Promising that they are open to all kinds of support, Atsız stated that it will be possible to realize this support more comprehensively in the coming periods. Emphasizing the cooperation between universities, OMU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Cengiz Batuk underlined that it is vital for universities to act together on YÖS as it should be in many issues, and reiterated his views that the International Student Entrance Examination should not only be aimed at increasing the number of students quantitatively, but should provide added value to the university in terms of quality and quality. Hitit University Rector Assist. Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Şimşek talked about his Üni-Dokap experiences on the subject and talked about the “Inter-University Joint YÖS” application and suggestions. Sharing his views on the subject, Şimşek stated that universities are hesitant on this issue and therefore, not much progress has been made in terms of cooperation.

Communication with Centers Abroad

Hitit University Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Murat Yılmaz asked ‘Which communication channels should be followed in YÖS overseas exam organizations’. Atsız said: “In the light of our experience, as Ondokuz Mayıs University, we are in contact with the official authorities. We are not in direct or indirect contact with any private company, we are only in contact with official Turkish authorities and our trusted representatives, for example, we are in contact with Maarif Schools and Attaché Offices.”

Pre-Exam Preparations and Question Preparation

On May 22, 2021, Hasan Atsız said that the YÖS studies, which will be held simultaneously on May 22, 2021, started about 3 months before the exam, and that the exam questions were archived for the past and these questions were shared with the candidates on the web page, and that the work of the question preparation commission and the exam coordinatorship was carried out with great sensitivity. He pointed out the importance of taking extraordinary measures especially in question preparation and security. In this sense, he pointed out that the online exam application may cause some security weaknesses and said that OMU YÖS will be held simultaneously face-to-face in a single session in all centers.

Hasan Atsız, who talked about the question preparation process in detail, stated that the relevant commission prepares the questions in the light of the question solving capacities of the candidates in each period, the changing question techniques, and that they also take into account the variability of question solving competencies in Turkey in this regard, and that the current question writing techniques and criteria of MoNE and ÖSYM are very effective in the formation of OMU YÖS exam questions.

Software Technologies Used in OMU YÖS

Hasan Atsız, who gave information about the auxiliary software used in receiving and sorting exam applications (ais.uzem.omu.edu.tr) and collecting candidate preferences and placing candidates at the end of the process (https://yostercih.omu.edu.tr), said that all of the software they use are licensed by OMU.

At the meeting, which lasted for about 1 hour, Hitit University Rector Assist. Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Şimşek expressed his desire for a YÖS joint working platform planned to be realized between OMU and Hitit University and stated that Ondokuz Mayıs University YÖS studies are a guide for them.
