“It is Necessary to Understand Law Differently”

In his speech, Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal underlined that the legal profession should never be seen as a profession and said the following to the graduating students “When the learning process is over, it means that the human being is also over. By completing the 4-year education process, you are entering a new phase where you will start your professional life. However, if you perceive your graduation as the end of the learning process; if you stop your personal development and your process of knowing the world, this will lead you to extinction.”

Ünal continued his speech by emphasizing that the graduating students belong to the OMU family and that it will not be possible to leave the family under any circumstances, and stated that the rectorate and the university will continue to stand by the graduating students with all the opportunities and said “you are a permanent member of Ondokuz Mayıs University, you are a child of this family”.

“Justice is one of the most important ideals of Islam”

In his speech, Dean Keçeligil mentioned that Islam attaches great importance to the concept of “Justice” and emphasized that various verses in the Quran emphasize “Justice”. Referring to the historical contexts of law, Keçeligil also mentioned Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the War of Independence and said that a new state necessitated a new legal system. As a natural consequence of this new nation state and the legal revolutions to be made, he stated that the opening of the first law school, “Ankara Law School of Justice” in 1925 was an important turning point. Keçeligil continued his words as follows: “At the center of the libertarian democratic system is the free individual equipped with rights and freedoms, free from all kinds of oppression; everything is positioned on the free individual, democracy is based on the concept of freedom, which is perceived as a value in the sense of autonomy.”

“The Diploma we receive is not the end but the beginning of a brand new war”

Speaking on behalf of the graduating students at the program, student representative Furkan Aydın emphasized that “We must be honest, fair, conscientious and meritorious lawyers” and stated that he is sure that his friends who will graduate will act with the same sensitivity. Stating that there are many abused women and children waiting to be rescued especially in social life, Aydın said that there is a society that is always hungry for justice and that courageous lawyers are of great importance in meeting this need.
